Wisdom Teeth Removal & Impaction Treatment

If you or your teen have been told that your wisdom teeth need to be extracted, it's completely natural to feel anxious. At Brite Smile Dental, located conveniently in San Diego (6280 Jackson Dr Suite 2), our priority is your comfort and safety.

What Are Wisdom Teeth, and Why Do They Cause Trouble?

Wisdom teeth, clinically known as third molars, are the last set of teeth to erupt, typically appearing between the ages of 17 and 25. While they served a critical purpose for our ancestors' coarse diets, modern mouths often lack the space required for them to come in properly.

The Problem: Impaction

When a wisdom tooth is unable to fully break through the gum line or grow into a healthy position, it is considered impacted. Impaction is the number one reason we recommend removal. The three main types of impaction we diagnose using advanced panoramic X-rays are:

  • Angular Impaction (Most Common): The tooth is angled forward, leaning into the second molar. This can damage the adjacent healthy tooth and lead to severe crowding.
  • Vertical Impaction: The tooth is in the correct vertical position but is still stuck beneath the gum or jawbone.
  • Horizontal Impaction: The tooth is lying completely sideways within the jawbone, pushing aggressively against the roots of the second molar.
  • Soft Tissue Impaction: The tooth has erupted through the bone but is covered by gum tissue, making it a breeding ground for bacteria and infection (pericoronitis)

Key Symptoms That signal TROUBLE

Even if your wisdom teeth aren't causing constant pain, they can lead to long-term health issues.

Dr. Ahmedo may recommend removal if you experience any of the following:

  • Persistent pain or tenderness in the back of the mouth or jaw.
  • Red, swollen, or bleeding gums around the impacted area.
  • Recurring infection (pericoronitis), often accompanied by bad breath (halitosis) or a bad taste.
  • The formation of fluid-filled sacs (cysts) or tumors that can damage the jawbone.
  • Crowding or shifting of your properly aligned existing teeth.

The Brite Smile Dental Approach to Extraction

Our goal is to make your wisdom tooth removal as comfortable and predictable as possible. We prioritize pre-operative planning and patient education.

Initial Consultation & Imaging

Your journey begins with a detailed oral exam and state-of-the-art digital panoramic X-rays. This imaging allows Dr. Ahmedo to precisely map the position of the tooth roots and their proximity to vital structures, such as nerves and sinuses. We will discuss the procedure, recovery, and customize a sedation plan just for you.

Personalized Sedation Options

We understand that patient comfort is paramount. We offer multiple levels of sedation dentistry to keep you relaxed throughout the procedure including;

Local Anesthesia, Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas), and Oral Sedation

The Extraction Procedure

Once you are completely comfortable and numb, Dr. Ahmedo will carefully and gently perform the extraction. After the removal, the site is carefully cleaned, and dissolvable sutures are often used to close the incision and promote faster healing.
